Public gardens hold tremendous power to influence landscaping norms and inspire change. By showcasing the beauty, functionality, and ecological value of native plants, these spaces help foster biodiversity, advocate for sustainable practices, and engage communities in environmental stewardship. 

This webinar will explore how public and demonstration gardens serve as powerful tools for native plant advocacy. Attendees will learn how gardens move beyond aesthetics to spark action—turning appreciation into engagement and inspiring participants to replicate these practices in their own communities.

We will hear insights from Nicole Machuca, Environmental Social Scientist at the Field Museum, on how public gardens influence behaviors, foster stewardship, and connect people to conservation efforts through research and community engagement. The Wild Ones Capital Region NY and the Wild Ones San Diego (CA) Chapters will share their experiences building native plant demonstration gardens and how these spaces drive community engagement, education, and advocacy. And We'll finish with a conversation exploring how public gardens create a lasting impact beyond planting day moderated by Kelly Kapuzzi, Demonstration Garden Char with the Wild Ones Hocking Hills (OH) Chapter.

In conjunction with members of Appalachian Audubon, Wild Ones SCPA members and friends meet at 10:00 am at Mt. Cuba Center to tour the gardens and research areas.  Those attending will pay entry fee.

Wild Ones SCPA in conjunction with Diakon Wilderness Greenhouse will be holding a native plant sale from 9-3 on May 10.   Members will be on-hand at the Diakon Wilderness Greenhouse to help the public select plants.   Come and fill your garden with beneficial native plants while also benefiting our Wild Ones South Central PA chapter and the Diakon Wilderness Center.

Parking is available at the St. Eleanor Regina Chapel.   We will talk a hike to find the masses of pink ladyslippers that make this part of the forest home.

Members will tour this native plant garden originally developed by Conococheague Audubon members.  This garden is a Penn State Extension certified Pollinator Friendly Garden consisting of about ⅓ acre of trees, shrubs, perennials, a vine trellis, and a water feature.   Tips for managing a garden cared for by volunteers with diverse experience levels will be shared.

Members only event.  Members tour The Bower: A Native Plant Landscape and Sculpture Park designed by Larry Weiner Landscape Assoc.  and enjoy a potluck at the barn.  Plant swap for those with extras to bring along.

Field Trip to visit the native plant garden and enjoy a nature walk with fall color.

Attendees meet at the mansion parking lot at 1:00pm.

Open to the public and free!   Large variety of native seeds  available to take home shared from members' gardens.   Talk on native plants and information on winter seed sowing will be part of the afternoon program.   Donations welcome.

The annual meeting will include an annual review/report, and elections will be held for board directors and officers.  A night to reflect and plan for upcoming year.
